Embracing Spring in Chicago
Celebrating Nature's Renewal with Family Traditions and Photography at Lincoln Park
Every spring, there's a special day my family and I eagerly await: the moment the Norway Maple leaves burst into a vibrant, light green. It’s like watching the world paint itself anew right before our eyes. This year, thanks to an early warm spell followed by a cool snap, the spectacle of spring has been even more stunning (except for the lack of cherry blossoms in Jackson Park for the 2nd year in a row). The crabapples and redbuds seem to be holding onto their blossoms longer, bathing our neighborhood in an extended display of pinks and purples.
Walking through Lincoln Park and visiting the Spring Garden show at the Lincoln Park Conservatory this week, I was reminded of how these moments of natural beauty are so vital. They break up the long, gray monotony of winter, injecting color and life into our days. It’s impossible not to feel a surge of happiness when faced with such a scene.
I always bring my camera on these walks. Capturing the delicate dance of light with the fresh blossoms and tender leaves is a joy. Each photograph not only preserves the beauty of spring but also serves as a reminder of these small, perfect moments of change and renewal.
But beyond just capturing these scenes, I treasure the way they make me pause and appreciate the here and now. In our fast-paced lives, it’s these natural pauses that offer a breath of fresh air. They invite us to slow down, to savor the moment, and to reconnect with the world around us.
As the season progresses, the intense greens of the Norway Maples will deepen, marking another chapter in the cycle of the year. But for now, I’m going to soak in this fleeting time of growth and new beginnings. These are the days that remind us of the beauty of change and the simple joy of witnessing the earth renew itself.
Spring is truly a season for renewal, not just in nature, but in our lives too. It’s a wonderful reminder of the beautiful transformations that are possible, often when we least expect them. Let’s enjoy this vibrant season together, celebrating the beauty that unfolds around us.
I’m curious, what’s your favorite part of spring? Is there a particular tree or flower that you look forward to seeing each year? Maybe it’s a place that comes alive in a way that lifts your spirit? I’d love to hear about what spring means to you.
